Longevity is not an abstract concept, faraway removed from our daily lives. Longevity starts with surviving another second, another day and another year. The decisions we take each second have a great deal of influence on our lifespan.
People who have learnt the fine art of living have managed to walk smilingly on its tight rope, without falling towards depression or anxiety. They see opportunities where others see misery and poverty. They see the future realistically without succumbing to useless worries.
One of the small decisions we take most of our days regards the transportation system. Thousands of researchers have tried to question whether some transportation means are safer than other and most of their results are easily available in the age of the Internet. The general consensus is that airplanes are safer than cars per traveled distance, meaning that traveling 1000 km by car is much riskier than flying the same distance.
Commercial airplanes are safer than smaller ones – which are safer than helicopters.
Motorcycles are almost “crash prone” (as my forensics teacher used to say) because they have two wheels like a bicycle and they develop the speed of a car without being sheltered. Basically during a crash you can jump in any direction if on a motorcycle compared to being in a car.
Continuing our talk about cars, their manufacturers did not openly embrace the safety belt; some enlightened members of our society made them mandatory since using a safety belt can decrease the probability of dying in a crash by 50%! Does it cost anything to use the belt once in a car?
Although accidents are a fact of life, there is one form of transport that is the safest of them all and that is the train. It is safe in terms of accidents and from an environmental point of view, it is safe on the long term as well. Most cities in Europe can easily be reached by train in a civilized manner.
Little decisions greatly influence the lifespan, so please don’t forget to use the safety belt and choose the train whenever you can! People have worked hard to get these statistical data, so make good use of the information.
