There is the magic of compound interest – those who understand it, earn it and those who don’t, pay it. Can this apply to something more than money? Can we leverage our experience in the same way?
Experts are able to earn higher prices than amateurs precisely because they build on previous mistakes, called experience. This may be the reason for which we are advised – and even expected – to find our niche as early as possible and do that activity year and year after year…
I find that boring; learning something new is fun and scary and exciting, but after the steep curve was climbed, it feels useless to continue doing the same thing when life is so short and passions are plenty. Jumping from one interest to another, I thought I was doomed to end my life poor – until I found a book written for other such black swans – “The Renaissance Soul: Life Design for People with too many Passions to Pick just One” by Margaret Lobenstine.
I have two very different majors – this after switching fields several times while in primary, secondary and high-school – and there are new interests on the horizon all the time. Picking a number of Focal Points to dedicate resources to – at the same time – is just what I need to function at my high speed – without feeling bored or unexcited from doing the same thing or overwhelmed by too many interests and not enough time.
The examples given prove that it is possible to blend all these unique experiences into a coherent life design and use each other as a career ladder of your own. The limits between fields of knowledge are changing all the time – and Renaissance Souls have an advantage here as their multiple passions train them to be more adaptable and flexible. For example, there is a higher chance of them being fluent in at least one foreign language or be an expert in computers – while one-niche persons frown upon these if they are not 100% overlapping their unique interest.
Are you a Renaissance Soul as well? Was this an asset or a liability for your career?
