Skip the sugar

What is the most efficient way to slow down aging and enjoy higher levels of energy? The title says it all: skip the sugar.

From all the diseases that afflicted humankind, there is none that will age you as fast as diabetes, which is a civilization disease in most cases.

There are two types of diabetes:

type I/autoimmune – frequent in children and teenagers, it may suddenly manifest itself through a hypoglycemic coma

type II/insulin resistant – frequent during the 50s-60s and increasingly prevalent in younger people in developed countries, it can run its course with no symptoms for years

The second type of diabetes is the best model of accelerated aging currently known. Many of its complications are frequently found as age-associated diseases about 20 years later in non-diabetic elderly. For example, as we age, our risk of developing atherosclerosis –  (silent) heart attacks and strokes and peripheral artery disease, renal failure, cataracts, macular degeneration, neuropathies – increases exponentially. These complications appear much earlier in diabetes – especially in patients who gorge themselves on sweets.

The simplest thing you can do today to slow down your aging is to skip the sugar and all its associated relatives: ingredients like fructose-glucose syrup, corn syrup, sugar replacements and many more.

Don’t fool yourself that dried fruits are way healthier – not much more anyway.

To stay on the safe side, respect your body (you won’t get a second one anyway) and introduce clean foods – with no necessary list of ingredients to read – the simple things in life like vegetables, fish, eggs and fruits once in a while.

Quitting the sugary addiction is difficult, just like quitting smoking, but it is totally worthwhile!

  1. When you say that dried fruits are not much healthier, is that because of the natural sugars? Can natural sugars aid in accelerated ageing as well?

I always try to eat natural, clean foods, that don’t have a long list of ingredients (I think this is the easiest way to determine whether a food is good or bad for you), however I never considered dried fruits in the ‘bad foods’ category.

    1. Good question!
Sugar is sugar, whether it’s found as such (in fruits) or extracted from plants. Sure it is better to eat dried fruits compared to ice-cream from McDonald’s. Dried fruits, just like fresh fruits, are healthy in moderation, yet you will get a sugar spike from them nonetheless and a couple of vitamins and minerals on the way. I mainly consume fruits in smoothies with other leafy vegetables – this way I cut from their sweetness and I increase the veggie count too 😉
